A Note From the Office

Attendance Week Award
Today wrapped up the Fifth annual campaign proclaiming September as Attendance Awareness Month for Attendance Works.  Grove Avenue was included the 29th Annual Attendance Week competition this year.  The Top Ten Award Ceremony, where 41 schools were honored for their top ten placement was held this morning.  Miss Boskelly and one of our 5th Graders who had perfect attendance last school year, represented Grove Avenue at the ceremony and received a certificate for FIRST PLACE for attendance in the medium school category.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone for your dedication to ensuring the students at Grove Avenue are present each day to learn and grow! The commitment of our community to a strong education for our students is what continues to make Grove such a wonderful school where students eagerly attend each day!

Bullying Prevention Month
October is Bullying Prevention Month and Grove will be participating in various activities throughout the month in order encourage our school community to work together to increase awareness of bullying on children of all ages and prevent and stop bullying. The first Monday of each October is Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™ which signifies the importance of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month each October. Grove will kick-off bullying prevention month by participating in Blue Shirt Day on Monday, October 2nd. We will also provide education and awareness through classroom lessons and other school activities throughout the month. Additional information regarding all school activities will be shared as the month progresses.

Change in Lunch Options
A few changes have been made to the lunch options that are being offered early next week, as well as, the number of lunch options that will be offered for the rest of the school year. The changes for Monday and Tuesday of next week are listed below. It is important to note that starting on Monday, there will only be two lunch options offered each day instead of the three options that have been offered thus far. This means that the “Fun Lunch” will no longer be a daily offering. It will sometimes be offered as one of the two options for lunch on given days, but it will not be a third option that is always available. With that said, salads and Sunbutter sandwiches will continue to be offered each day in addition to the two daily hot lunch choices.

Monday, October 2nd – Choice A: Classic Cheese Pizza
Choice B: Zesty Barbeque Chicken Pieces

Tuesday, October 3rd – Choice A: Lasagna Style Pasta Bake
Choice B: Three Cheese Whole Grain Wrap

Conference Sign-Up
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, October 18th from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday, October 19th from 1-8 p.m. Links to sign-up for parent conferences will be shared next Friday. Please plan to attend conferences for your child(ren) in order to communicate with their teacher on their progress thus far this school year.

Great Grove Reads

Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate

When Jackson was little he had an imaginary friend. His friend was a cat and he named him Crenshaw. That was a long time ago when Jackson was young and carefree. It was before Jackson relied on facts and only facts just like a scientist. Jackson and his family have been struggling since his father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and both he and Jackson’s mother have lost their full time jobs. Now, his mother and father work multiple part time jobs but money is so tight that they have resorted to selling everything that they have. Then suddenly out of the blue Crenshaw is back. Jackson didn’t wish for him or ask for him…. so why does his imaginary friend seem so real? His dog and his sister are noticing something strange in the house....as if they sense that Crenshaw is there too.  Maybe Crenshaw is exactly what they all need right now. This is a great realistic book by the author of The One and Only Ivan.

A Note from the Office

Thank you to our PTO and all of our parent volunteers who made the Back to Bash last Friday such a success! What a great way to kick-off the school year as a community!

Social Global Studies Curriculum Parent Survey
We are currently undergoing a curriculum review of our social-global studies curriculum and are requesting your input.  We hope you will complete this survey for our social studies curriculum steering team.  The data from this survey will allow us to review your feedback and input as we create our units of study in social-global studies for our elementary students.  We thank you for your time. The survey will close on Thursday, October 5th. Click here to take the survey.

Lunch Accounts
If your child eats school breakfast or lunch, please be sure to check the balance on your child’s account regularly and deposit funds for breakfast or lunch any time they are close to zero or in the negative.  We of course will always provide children with a lunch, however, when a lunch account reaches a balance that is in the negative, it is the policy of our food service provider that the child is only given the Sunbutter sandwich. Parents should receive both phone calls and e-mails from Barrington 220’s automated system anytime a child’s balance is below ten dollars.

School Picture Day and Family Pictures
Picture day for our students is on Thursday, September 28th. Order forms for student pictures were sent home with students today. Any family that wants to purchase school pictures must provide the completed order form and payment the day the pictures are taken. Parents can send checks with the order form on picture day or purchase portrait packages online through Lifetouch School Photography. The web address for ordering online is mylifetouch.com.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Running Club
We are in need of volunteers to help support and supervisor our before and after school running club. We are thrilled to have so many students who are interested in participating in the club and we are eager to provide them with a great experience. As a result, we are looking for parents who are willing to help supervise or even run with our students on Tuesday mornings before school or Thursday after school. Please contact Mrs. Emrath if you are willing to help!

Shipping for Hurricane Harvey Supplies
We had many contributions this week to our Hurricane Harvey Supply Drive! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this effort! If you are still interested in helping, we are still looking for funds to support shipping of the materials. Please contact the school office if you are able to help!

Principal/Parent Book Study
During my presentation at Back to School Night, I invited all parents to join me and our Assistant Principal, Laura Boskelly, for a Parent/Principal Book Study using the book Grit by Angela Duckworth. Please click on the RSVP link to indicate whether or not you will attend either the evening or morning sessions that we are offering. The RSVP is simply for planning purposes for us to determine the space at Grove where we will host the conversations and how to best set-up for the event!

Family Pictures
We are offering the opportunity for Grove families to come in on two different evenings to take family pictures to be added to our collage of Grove Families in the main hallway of the school. The pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There are still time slots available for families to sign-up. Click on the link to choose a time slot on the Sign-Up Genius.

Fourth Grade Happenings

Fourth Grade is off to a great start! This great group of eager learners is off and running! We are starting our year with some wonderful realistic fiction, in both reading and writing. All the students are immersed in the story of The Tiger Rising. They are learning how to analyze characters and revise their thinking as they read the text carefully. They are like detectives searching for evidence! This deep reading is also giving them ideas as they write their own fictional stories. We successfully completed our first math unit on place value, and are currently studying factors and multiples. The students are loving science! Mrs. Chang and Mrs. Anderson’s classes are studying animal habitats with Fiddler Crabs and African Dwarf Frogs, while Miss Hanna and Mrs. Reagan/Mrs. Clark’s students are participating in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math); we will swap units when they are over at the end of September. We are looking forward to our trip to Stillman Nature Center. There, the kids will be engaged in a field experience to follow up/introduce our animal studies unit. Another exciting experience for fourth grade students is orchestra. Lessons have started and we look forward to hearing these musicians at a future orchestra concert. Just think, this is only a recap of the first four weeks! The fourth grade teachers have many more fun and educational activities planned for the rest of the year. Here’s to a successful year!
