The Grove Grizzly Holiday Parties Our PTO Room Parents will be hosting classroom holiday parties for our students next Friday, December 21st from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Once again, all parents who are planning on attending the class party, must notify the room parent(s) for their child’s class in order to ensure they have a visitor’s badge printed ahead of time. All visitor’s must have a badge in order to be permitted to enter the school and attend the party. This new practice, which was started earlier this year, is intended to ensure the safety of all of our students during the holiday festivities.   Author Visit and Family Night in January We will be having author, Aaron Reynolds, visiting our school in January! Not only will he be presenting to our students during the school day, but he will also offer a presentation for our families in the evening! This is a great way to continue to promote family reading and connect our entire community during the course of our Family Reading Program that will also begin in January! It is truly a wonderful learning experience and a challenging endeavor for all who participate.     This year’s speech tournament will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Station Middle School.  All of our 4th and 5th grade students are invited to participate.  Students may participate as a solo, duet, or group of three to five members.  An informational meeting for students will be held at Grove on Thursday, January 10th during fourth and fifth grade lunch and recess periods.  Fifth grade students will meet in Mr. Bergquist’s room; and fourth grade students will meet in Ms. Hanna’s room.  Students will receive details about the tournament at this time and have the opportunity to sign up and pick scripts.  Pieces will be available for children to consider performing if they so choose. Please contact Mr. Bergquist with questions about the tournament at rbergquist@barrington220.org    Wanted: Speech Tournament Judges and Greeters The District 220 Speech Tournament is need of several judges for this year’s tournament on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Station Middle School, approximately 8:30 to 1:00.  Volunteer judges may be parents, teachers, grandparents, and community members.  All are encouraged to participate.  Judges are trained at the event and will receive a breakfast and lunch during the day. A judge’s responsibilities include watching a variety of student performances, completing judging sheets and providing feedback to the students.  It really is a fun and rewarding time! If you are unable to work the entire time, we are also in need of greeters for shifts during the event. Grove usually has about 100 fourth and fifth graders participate in this event. If you are a parent or coach, substitute judges are available so you can support your child/students during their performance. The Grove Grizzly A Note from Mrs. Matthews   1st Grade, 4th Grade, and Choir Concert On Thursday, December 13th our 1st Grades, 4th Grades, and Choir will be having their music concert. The students will be performing for the whole school at 1 p.m. in the afternoon. There will be limited seating available during this performance for parents or family members to attend. The evening performance for parents and families will be at 6:30 p.m. and should have plenty of seating. Students should arrive for the performance at 6:00 p.m. and should be dressed in nice clothing.   Erin’s Law Presentations Many states, including Illinois, have passed a law with the intent of increasing the awareness of child sexual abuse. You may have heard of this legislation under it’s more common name, Erin’s Law, in honor of Erin Merryn, a young woman who has crossed the country advocating for laws that will increase awareness of this crime against children. One of the requirements of this law is that schools provide an age-appropriate curriculum to all students relating to sexual abuse prevention. The purpose of the lessons is to provide students with the tools they need for personal safety, and to help them build confidence in advocating for themselves.   Starting next week, Ms. Boskelly (Assistant Principal) and Mr. Walcott (Social Worker) will be conducting these lessons with our students. Classroom teachers will also be at the presentations. Please be sure to read the official letter regarding the presentations that was send out by Ms. Boskelly earlier today.
