Thank you to all of our room parents who planned our Halloween Parties on Wednesday!!! We are thankful for your collaboration and creativity to continue this tradition for our students virtually!! Also, thank you to all of our families who submitted student pictures for our Grove Virtual Halloween Parade. It was great to see all of the students in their costumes, and we hope you and your children enjoyed watching the slide show and seeing other students as well!!! We wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween this weekend! Please remember to follow the guidelines below in order to reduce the spread of COVID.

Keys to Reducing the Spread:

  • Wear your mask

  • Watch your distance

  • Wash your hands

  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, and mouth

Adaptive Pause to Hybrid In-Person Learning Mode

At the Oct. 20 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Harris announced our district will do an adaptive pause of our Hybrid mode from Wednesday, Oct. 28 until at least Monday, Nov. 9th, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in our community and the region.

The Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 4th to discuss the next steps for Barrington 220 schools. At this point in time, all families will know whether the district will be continuing with the “Adaptive Pause” in Distance Learning or if students can return to the Hybrid mode on Monday, Nov. 9th. The meeting will be held at 7pm at BMS-Station Campus.

Social Emotional Support for Students

As our students continue to navigate our consistently changing landscape due to COVID 19, we are continuously considering how our children are coping and their overall mental health. Please know that our school and district are here to support our students who are struggling and may benefit from additional resources. Please see the attached letter regarding this and view the short video explaining how families can access the online META app that is also available to connect students with counselors while at home.

Board Seeks Community Input on Next Superintendent

Friday, October 23, 2020

We had a great first week in our Hybrid Learning Mode with students coming into the building for in-person learning!! It was fantastic to have students with us once again! Thank you to all of our parents who completed the COVID Symptoms Screening prior to student arrival. This is a critical component to keeping our arrival efficient and students being able to go straight to class once they get to the building!! Please be sure to continue to complete the screener this coming Monday and Tuesday for in-person learning.

Thank you to our PTO and the families who donated to provide dinner for our staff during parent/teacher conferences! We had an awesome spread of goodies to go along with the individually packaged sandwiches. The continued support and generosity of our community is greatly appreciated!!!

Adaptive Pause to Hybrid In-Person Learning Mode

At the Oct. 20 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Harris announced our district will do an adaptive pause of our Hybrid mode from Wednesday, Oct. 28 until at least Monday, Nov. 9, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in our community and the region.

The announcement comes after the Lake County Health Department recommended on Tuesday that all Lake County public and private K-12 schools transition to virtual learning. Though Barrington 220 serves students in Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties, the district is considered a Lake County school district and works directly with them for guidance.

In Barrington 220 the rise in cases is reflected when looking at the district's health metrics on the Northwestern Medicine dashboard. Since earlier this week, for each of the four zip codes, the number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days has either exceeded or has been nearly at our Step 3 (Hybrid) threshold of 200.

As a result, our schedule for next week will be as follows:

  • Monday, Oct. 26: "A" day for all students

  • Tuesday, Oct. 27: "B" day for all students

  • Starting Wednesday, Oct. 28 (Adaptive Pause of Hybrid begins) - All students will temporarily return to Distance Learning mode and we will resume our distance learning schedule that we followed from August until the hybrid mode began.

One change you can anticipate is that we will no longer be running our morning special showcase, however, our staff will be using the 8:00-8:30 a.m. time to connect with small groups and individual students. This time will resemble the afternoon time block we have been using to provide targeted direct support to students each day. Classroom teachers and other school staff will communicate directly with students and families to notify them when they want to meet with students. Whole class participation via Zoom will continue to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 4th to discuss the next steps for Barrington 220 schools. At this point in time, all families will know whether or not the district will be continuing with the “Adaptive Pause” in Distance Learning or if students can return to the Hybrid mode on Monday, Nov. 9. The meeting will be held at 7pm at BMS-Station Campus.

Virtual Halloween Parties

Wednesday, October 28th

11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

We will be holding our virtual class parties on Wednesday, October 28th from 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Classroom teachers will provide a short break prior to the start of the party in order for students to change into costumes or retrieve any materials needed for the party. Throughout the party, our room parents will be running a variety of activities they have planned for our students!! Due to the fact that this is a school sponsored event, the following guidelines must still be followed when students are participating in the party:

  • Consider safety and the appropriateness of a costume for an elementary school. Costumes involving fake blood or violent attributes are not allowed

  • Look-alike weapons are prohibited and should not appear on camera at anytime

  • Please keep face paint and masks to a minimum as students need to be easily recognized and often become uncomfortable when wearing paint or masks

    • Examples of appropriate face paint include: cat whiskers, Harry Potter’s scar, “eye black” on an athlete, etc.

    • Examples of appropriate masks include those that cover only part of the faces such as the noise and mouth with eyes visible or a mask that just covers the eyes

We hope to create a safe and fun event for our students, so thank you for your cooperation!

Virtual Halloween Parade

It has always been a Grove tradition for students to participate in a Halloween costume parade where students and staff walk through the Grove neighborhood for the entire Grove community to see all Grove kids and teachers in their costumes. As a result, we have determined an alternative way to carry on this tradition! We are inviting families to take a picture of their child dressed in costume for the Halloween party and then submit one picture of each student in his/her costume for a "Virtual Parade Slideshow" that we will share on the daily school announcements on Friday, October 30th. Please submit your pictures by noon on Thursday, October 29th to be included in the virtual parade!!!  A link to the Google Form to submit pictures was shared in the Grizzly email blast and will be sent out to families multiple times with reminders!! We look forward to seeing your photos!

Thank you to all parents for attending Parent/Teacher Conference this past week either virtually or in-person! It is always great to connect with our parents to discuss students' growth and progress both academically and socially/emotionally. Our continued partnership and mutual support is more important than ever!

I have included very important information below regarding our switch to the hybrid model next week. Please review the arrival and dismissal procedures carefully and make sure that you complete the COVID screener for your child before he/she leaves for school in the morning. You will do this using the digital screening app, if your child is attending in person. Please also share the Grove Hybrid Procedures video with your child so they can also see what to expect next week when coming into Grove. We look forward to welcoming our students back into the building on Monday!

Hybrid Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

Please review the document and video with detailed directions for parents who are dropping off and picking up students for in-person learning. We are expecting an increased volume of students who will be car riders and have adjusted our procedures in order to help things move along efficiently. As a result, it will be important for parents to ensure they know exactly where to drop-off and pick-up students each day, as we have assigned families to specific areas based on the number of car riders we anticipate to have each day. Please note, we have added a pick-up and drop-off area to our procedures.

COVID-19 Symptoms Screening for In-Person Learning

All students participating in our in-person hybrid learning, must have a completed electronic version of the COVID-19 Symptoms Screener filled out prior to entering our building. This must be filled out the same day the student is attending school and not the night before. Parents can use a cell phone, iPad, or computer to visit health.barrington220.org, log in, and complete the survey. Be sure to click SUBMIT after answering each of the questions!! Upon students’ arrival to school they will hold up their I.D./bus tag to be scanned and school staff will be able to immediately determine whether or not a student can be permitted to enter the building. Directions for using the new system are included below!!

Preparing for the Switch to Hybrid Learning

As we are making plans for the return of our students in the hybrid learning model, there are several things that parents can do to help prepare for their child’s transition as well! Please check out the list below:

  • Have your child practice wearing a mask for extended periods of time, as students will be required to wear a mask for the duration of the time they are in the building.

  • Make sure your child has their I.D. and red coil with the holder for their I.D., as these will be scanned to ensure that students have a completed COVID-19 Screener and can enter the building quickly upon arrival

  •  Bookmark the COVID-19 Symptom Screener health.barrington220.org, to easily access it each morning and certify your child prior to their arrival.

  • Consider an organization system for your child’s supplies/materials to be transported to and from school, as students will need many of the supplies we sent home at the beginning of the year for learning at school on their in-person days.

Social Emotional Support for Students

As our students continue to navigate our consistently changing landscape due to COVID-19, we are continuously considering how our children are coping and their overall mental health. Please know that our school and district are here to support our students who are struggling and may benefit from additional resources. Primary Teacher’s Literacy Professional Development Training

Oct. 12th & 13th

On Monday, October 12th and Tuesday, October 13th our primary teachers will be participating in professional development with a staff developer from Columbia University. This training is a part of our second year in a two-year commitment we made to learn from and work with experts in the implementation of our reading and writing curriculum.  As a result, students in kindergarten - 2nd grades will possibly have a change to their daily schedule on these two days, as there will be a portion of the day when each teacher will be working directly with the staff developer. Classroom teachers will communicate directly with parents regarding the shifts in their class schedules on those days, and they will inform the students, as well. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, however, this will definitely prove to be a beneficial and timely training as we shift into a hybrid model where staff will be balancing literacy instruction in-person, remotely, and providing asynchronous lessons or activities for students to complete independently.

Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences

The sign-up for our fall Parent/Teacher Conference is currently open and will remain open until 6 p.m. on Monday, October 12th.  Please click on the link below for directions to our sign-up platform “Meet the Teacher” in order to sign-up. When signing-up, parents will need to indicate whether they plan to attend the conference in person or would prefer a conference via Zoom. Conferences will be scheduled for 20 minutes, with 15 minutes of that time being used for the conference and 5 minutes being used for cleaning between conferences. All parents coming in for in-person conferences will be required to complete a COVID screener before being allowed to enter. Please access the document, print and complete, and bring it with you to the conferences. We are trying to limit the number of people in the building on these days so two parents will be permitted to attend per child, however, children will not be permitted to enter the building on these days. As a result, if this is not possible for your family, please sign-up for a Zoom conference.

Grove “Meet the Teacher” Parent Guide in English

Grove “Meet the Teacher” Parent Guide in Spanish

When parents log on to Meet the Teacher, they will be able to sign-up for conferences for multiple children and for any staff member that works with their child including our art, gym, music, and library teachers. Conferences with specials teachers are not required, but are an option we are offering to parents. In addition, all related services staff members will meet with parents separately from the conferences with classroom teachers. As a result, parents can also schedule conference times with our Social Worker, Speech and Language Pathologist, Reading Resource Teachers, English Learner Teacher, Special Education Resource Teachers, and the Extended Teacher. It is highly recommended that parents meet with any related service staff member that works with their child.

Conferences are being held on Wednesday, October 14th from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday, October 15th from 12-7 p.m. Please be sure to plan accordingly in order to be able to attend conferences during the conference days that have been designated by the district for teachers to meet with parents. This is valuable time to discuss the individual growth and skills of your child, as well as, work together with the teacher to plan and set goals towards your child’s individual progress.
