A Note from the Office

Back to School Night
We will be hosting our annual Back to School Night for parents on Wednesday, September 13th starting at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Please plan to join us that evening in order to learn about plans for our school, as well as, to meet with your child’s teacher and learn more specifics about the classroom and your child’s grade level curriculum. A schedule for our evening together is provided below. Please note, this event is intended for parents only, but it is important to us that we have all parents here. If childcare is a concern for the evening of this event, please contact the school office.

Schedule for the Evening:
  • 6:30-7:00 p.m.            Principal Presentation - Gym
  • 7:05-7:35 p.m.            Classroom Session 1
  • 7:35-7:45 p.m.            Transition

Morning Arrival Reminders
As everyone is still getting into a new routine with our early start time, I want to provide a few reminders and pointers to families who are dropping off in the morning. Any students being dropped off between 7:45 a.m.  and 7:55 a.m. should go directly to either the K-Ground or intermediate playground to play until the bell rings. Once the 7:55 a.m. bell rings, students will enter the building. As a result, if a student arrives at 7:55 a.m. or after they will be directed to go straight into the building in order to get ready for class. Parents dropping off students at 7:55 a.m. or after should drop off at the Grove Avenue entrance or the front entrance of the school via the parking lot. Please do not drop off students by the K-Ground if it is after 7:55 a.m. as the other students will already be entering the building and our supervisors will be walking those students inside.

Homework and After School Activities
Once again, we will be maintaining our homework policy at Grove this year where we will not have specific content related homework assignments for students. With that said, it is expected that students will read every evening and practice math facts. We believe that it is critical that students spend their time outside of school practicing their reading or reading for pleasure and also having time to spend with family and explore other talents in addition to their academics. Classroom teachers do provide optional activities related to our curriculum for students and parents to complete at home should they request it or choose to complete it, but these are not required.

I have provided a link to an article for parents regarding child involvement in extracurricular activities. The staff at Grove will continue to provide a wide variety of clubs for students to participate in here at school. More information regarding the offerings will be coming in the next couple of weeks. Most clubs provided to students at Grove this year will take place after school hours.

Great Grove Reads

Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar

Carol had great plans for her summer; hanging with friends, sleepovers and shopping. Her plans did not include going three hours into the desert of New Mexico to stay with her grandfather while her family get his house ready to sell. Her grandfather has lived alone for many years but now must move into a facility for people with dementia. Her grandfather tells her crazy stories of his life with her grandma Rosa. Stories that include living for more than 100 years, a beautiful lake, a tree that would protect them from sickness and death, and the bees that took away the lake and the rain. Since that time there has been a terrible drought. He tells her only the bees can bring back the rain and end a 100 year old drought. As the summer wears on Carol, or Carolina as her grandfather calls her, begins to listen more carefully and realizes everything that he is about to give up. It is more than a house; it is his roots, his legacy his family, and … hers too. This book is a 2018 Rebecca Caudill nominee.

Box Tops for Education at Grove Avenue School!

*** Please keep an eye out for a baggie coming home
to collect your Box Tops for Education ***
All you have to do is cut the little pink and white box with the Box Tops for Education logo out of various grocery items and collect them in the baggie coming home. That baggie is one convenient way your student can return their Box Tops to school.  Please remember to write your student’s name on the baggie in order for us to know who it’s from!  Box Tops can also be put in the Box Tops collection box located in Grove's front office.  It's just that simple!

Each box top is worth 10 cents with the exception of Super Box Tops and Bonus Box Tops which are worth more.

So please, start cutting out those little coupons and turn them in by our deadline of
Friday, October 13th. The three students to submit the most Box Tops will receive a $5 gift certificate to use at the Grove Avenue School Scholastic Fall Book Fair!

Can you imagine how many box tops we can collect if the whole school participates? Every little bit helps!

(Please note ** be careful not to cut off the expiration dates.)
