The Grove Grizzly

A Note from the Office

Thank you to all of our parents who attended our Back to School Night on Thursday! It was great to have the opportunity to connect with parents and share our visions and goals for the school year!

Principal/Parent Book Study
During my presentation on Friday, I invited all parents to join me and our Assistant Principal, Laura Boskelly, for a Parent/Principal Book Study using the book Grit by Angela Duckworth. Please click on the RSVP link to indicate whether or not you will attend either the evening or morning sessions that we are offering. The RSVP is simply for planning purposes for us to determine the space at Grove where we will host the conversations and how to best set-up for the event!

Family Pictures
We are offering the opportunity for Grove families to come in on two different evenings to take family pictures to be added to our collage of Grove Families in the main hallway of the school. The pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th from 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. Click on the link to choose a time slot in the Sign-Up Genius.

Hurricane Harvey Relief
We are extending our collection for Hurricane Harvey Relief for one more week.  Please consider helping with phase one, by purchasing supplies for students of the same grade that your child is currently in this year. I have included the specific school supply lists for each grade at Rhodes School below. Any cleaning supplies or toiletries are welcomed, and you may also provide monetary donations by providing cash or Visa gift cards that will be used to purchase vouchers for school uniforms. On average, the school uniforms cost $45-$50 for both boys and girls. Additionally, monetary donations intended to help with the shipping of supplies are needed. Please contact Mrs. Matthews via phone or e-mail if you are willing to help with shipping.

Great Grove Reads
Save me A Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan

This book is told through two points of view. Joe has learning problems and has been the target of the school bully since the start of the school year. So, when a new student arrives and becomes the bully’s newest target Joe cannot say he isn't a little relieved.

Ravi has just moved to the U.S from India. He has always been considered very smart. He is only one of two students from India at this school; Dillon Samreen is is the other. Ravi is sure that he and Dillon will be good friends after all they share many similar experiences. However, Dillon is the school bully and soon Ravi becomes Dillon’s newest target.

Joe and Ravi never thought that they would become friends since they have many differences but friendship can cross any boundary. This is a good story that shows sometimes a great friend is the person that you least expect and all it takes is getting to know someone to get a friendship started. This book is nominated for the 2018 Illinois Bluestem Award.
