Kindergartener’s Top 5 Things
to be thankful for...

November is a great time in kindergarten when we are learning about the first Thanksgiving. So, we took a poll as to what the kindergarten students of Grove were most thankful for.

Here are their top 5!

#5 Electronics - Now that we have one to one ipads in kindergarten this year, the students are enjoying expanding their literacy and numeracy skills! Our enrichment students are having fun coding with Bee Bots, Ozobots, Dash & Dots, and Osmo!

#4 Sharing - Sharing is a big part of our school day. We spend time sharing basic school supplies, Free Choice learning toys, and kind words.

#3 Food - After learning what the Pilgrims ate on the Mayflower journey,  kindergarten students are very grateful for their good meals at home and healthy snacks at school.

#2 Family - We couldn’t survive kindergarten without our loving families!

#1 Friends - The friendships we make in kindergarten will be fondly remembered for a lifetime.

Hello from the world of Extended

It has been a wonderful start to the school year that seems to be defined by a particularly lively buzz of progress. In math we are all in on fractions. At the third grade level we are about to delve into the structure of a fraction and purpose of that structure for determining value. In fourth grade, a review of that structure is quickly followed by an exploration of adding and subtracting fractions. While in fifth grade, naturally we have progressed into multiplication and division of fractions and how these skills can be applied to the world around us. At all three levels, we have used my trademarked purple construction paper strips to physically represent fractions and then turned these paper creations into the model drawings we are expected to master for each of the four operations.

On the reading side, fourth grade has nearly finished our historical fiction unit. With many of the texts having challenging vocabulary the kids have taken great pride in creating an equally challenging and ever-evolving Quizlet vocabulary list. Little did we know at the time we started our list that a new extension, Quizlet Live, would be created making word studies a fun, physical, and exciting game! In fifth grade, we are wrapping up a very reflective research-based essay for the annual Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest. The topic this year centers around Armistice Day which took effect almost 100 years ago at the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. Students were asked to "discuss the pros and cons this war introduced to society..." A heavy topic, indeed. Though it was a very interesting topic I know we are all looking forward to getting back to more readers choice and the great pieces of literature that the kids have come to expect.
