Family Reading Program Kick-Off

We had an amazing kick-off to the Family Reading Program on Thursday morning! Information about the program was e-mailed and sent home with students on Thursday. If you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact your child’s classroom teacher. Students were also provided with a copy of the book The Wild Robot by Peter Brown on Friday (one copy per family, sent home with the youngest sibling in a family) with the intention of every family reading the book together! Our One Book, One Grove initiative will not only connect families, but our entire Grove community throughout the course of the next five weeks. Students will be able to discuss the book with parents, neighbors, classmates, and any other Grove student! We are encouraging families to read the book in the best way that works for their family. This may include parents reading to children, siblings taking turns reading aloud to the family, or a child reading to their parents! The first weekly reading log will be due on Thursday, February 1st and students will receive their Family Reading Program t-shirts on Friday, February 2nd for meeting the all classroom goal. We can’t wait to see all the students and staff in their shirts! Happy Reading!!!

Petition Requests
Over the last several years we have had a small number of requests for students to attend a school other than the building to which they have been assigned by the school district based on location of their home/residence within defined attendance area boundaries. Parents/guardians who feel they have a compelling reason to submit a transfer request, should complete the district's Transfer Request From and submit it to the attention of Dr. Craig Winkelman, Assistant Superintendent of Operations and K-12 Schools, prior to February 28, 2018. The form and information about the transfer request process can be accessed at the following web address:

Great Grove Reads

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

This is a fun story of a robot that was on a merchant vessel sailing to a new port when a massive storm hit the ship. Roz the robot washed up on the shore of a deserted island along with many other robots. Accidentally, by one of the curious animals, she is switched on. At first all the animals were afraid of her and stayed away. Slowly Roz tried, in her own way, to make friends with them by helping in any way she could; even becoming the mother to an orphaned gosling. But, robots don’t have feelings… or do they. This is a short and cute story of friendship even among differences.

This book is nominated for the 2018 Illinois Bluestem Award.

Horizon by Scott Westerfield

Imagine you live in a world where robots are a lot more common. Now imagine you are part of an elite robotics team on a plane heading toward Japan for a competition. Suddenly the pilot experiences strange forces at work outside the plane. Radio transmissions are sent and received but nothing can stop whatever is outside from attacking the plane. As lightning rips through the plane people are accepted or rejected. When it finally crashes only the students remain but they have no idea where they are or what has happened to all the other passengers. At first it appears to be another planet; strange animals and plants and none of them friendly, inhabit this new place. To survive the kids must use their knowledge, skills, and above all they must work together. If you are looking for a good sci fi/adventure story try this one. This is a start of a new series.

A Note From the Office
After our first week back in 2018, I just wanted to thank our entire community for their support. There are just a few short reminders from the Grove office this week.

Winter Clothing Reminder
Please make sure that your child comes to school every day dressed to be outside. We go outside all year long and they need to be prepared to be outside in the morning before school and at recess time, especially on cold days. We had a lot of students who were not prepared with gloves, hats, and scarves this week and while we try to provide items for students who forget or lose something, whenever we can it is always better for them to have their own winter gear so they can go directly outside and they know it will fit them!!
