A Note from the Office

Family Reading Program Kick-Off

We had an amazing kick-off to the Family Reading Program on Thursday morning! Information about the program was e-mailed and sent home with students on Thursday. If you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact your child’s classroom teacher. Students were also provided with a copy of the book The Wild Robot by Peter Brown on Friday (one copy per family, sent home with the youngest sibling in a family) with the intention of every family reading the book together! Our One Book, One Grove initiative will not only connect families, but our entire Grove community throughout the course of the next five weeks. Students will be able to discuss the book with parents, neighbors, classmates, and any other Grove student! We are encouraging families to read the book in the best way that works for their family. This may include parents reading to children, siblings taking turns reading aloud to the family, or a child reading to their parents! The first weekly reading log will be due on Thursday, February 1st and students will receive their Family Reading Program t-shirts on Friday, February 2nd for meeting the all classroom goal. We can’t wait to see all the students and staff in their shirts! Happy Reading!!!

Petition Requests
Over the last several years we have had a small number of requests for students to attend a school other than the building to which they have been assigned by the school district based on location of their home/residence within defined attendance area boundaries. Parents/guardians who feel they have a compelling reason to submit a transfer request, should complete the district's Transfer Request From and submit it to the attention of Dr. Craig Winkelman, Assistant Superintendent of Operations and K-12 Schools, prior to February 28, 2018. The form and information about the transfer request process can be accessed at the following web address:

Great Grove Reads

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

This is a fun story of a robot that was on a merchant vessel sailing to a new port when a massive storm hit the ship. Roz the robot washed up on the shore of a deserted island along with many other robots. Accidentally, by one of the curious animals, she is switched on. At first all the animals were afraid of her and stayed away. Slowly Roz tried, in her own way, to make friends with them by helping in any way she could; even becoming the mother to an orphaned gosling. But, robots don’t have feelings… or do they. This is a short and cute story of friendship even among differences.

This book is nominated for the 2018 Illinois Bluestem Award.
