Students in Episode 3 described some of the many STEM-related opportunities available in Barrington 220. Episode 4 allowed students to define the concept of coding at each of their grade levels. Students in Episode 5 talked about a few of the video production opportunities available in Barrington 220. Our high school student expert in Episode 6 shared many examples of her creative designs being used for several BHS programs and events. Finally, a student expert in Episode 7 offered her view on applying problem solving and critical thinking skills in her learning.

Musical Survey
As we are closing in on the end of the school year, we are also starting to make preparations for next school year. In efforts to prepare for the future, we often reflect on the past and assess our programs in order to improve or make necessary changes. With that said, we also seek input from multiple sources in order to take into account different perspectives. In preparing for our music programming for next year, we wish to receive some input from our parents in regards to the music shows/programs throughout the year that feature our students. Please complete this very brief survey regarding our musicals in order to provide our staff with feedback to consider in moving forward with our music shows for next school year. Currently, we hold one all school holiday musical before winter break and our fifth graders have their own musical at the end of the school year.

Upcoming Dates
Monday, May 28th – No School, Memorial Day
Tuesday, May 29th – 5th Grade Farewell, 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 30th – Last Day of School

Great Grove Reads

Summer is a Great Time to Read!

Please visit the library webpage for some great reading ideas. These include a list that I have created (and added to) for chapter books without a lot of middle school content as well as all the Illinois Award book lists for the different grade levels. I have spoken with all 2nd-5th graders about these lists. Also, please visit my Wondering What to Read Next? page for additional links to great book sites. These sites will provide additional help for all readers.

Remember to sign up for the Barrington Area Library summer reading/learning program. Click here for the Summer Learning Challenge. Also BAL has some reading suggestions. Click here for more information.

Have a great summer and I look forward to talking with all the students in August about great books that they read.

2018-2019 School Supplies
Grove purchases all of the school supplies for the students each year. To cover the cost of the school supplies for the year, a fee of $40.00 will appear in the parent portal in IC with school dues and fees in July. Please note that the fees for the 2018-2019 school year have been reduced from the $45.00 that was required this past year to $40.00. We purchase many of our supplies on an as needed basis, as we are often able to use various supplies from year to year. When we do not need to purchase as many supplies, we are able to lower the fees to only collect funds for what needs to be replenished for the next year.

The only items that families will need to purchase for individual students include a backpack, gym shoes to keep at school for P.E., and a lunch box (if desired). Please view our school supply memo for more details regarding our school supply process.

2018-2019 Food Policy
This year, representatives from our staff worked together on a Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee. One of the activities we completed together, was a review of our food policy. In reviewing the policy, the committee created updates of our practices that will be implemented at Grove starting in the 2018-2019 school year. One major change to note is that students will no longer be permitted to bring in food items to celebrate individual birthdays. The purpose of this change is to ensure that we comply with Public Act 96-0349 that promotes prevention and management of life threatening allergic reactions. We appreciate the collaborative efforts of all of our families in ensuring that the critical responsibility of keeping all of our students safe is met.

Episode 7 of Learning NOW in Barrington 220 is online, Critical Thinking
Episode 7 of Learning NOW in Barrington 220 highlights examples of Critical Thinking across Barrington 220. Students Chandler Ding (Hough), Manuel Sarmiento (BMS-Station), and Riley Wilford (BHS) talk about some of the ways they are able to One to World devices to engage in critical thinking activities. Students share examples including problem solving, research, data gathering, analysis, and making decisions.

The episode’s segment features BMS-Prairie students Braeden Cullen and Gauri Chugh explaining their Illinois Junior Academy of Science award-winning Science Fair projects involving computer and behavioral sciences.

At the end of the episode, please take the Parent/Community survey!
