The Grove Grizzly Family Reading Program 2020 We had an amazing kick-off to the Family Reading Program on Thursday morning! Information about the program was e-mailed to parents on Thursday. If you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact your child’s classroom teacher. Students were also provided with a copy of the book Masterpiece by Elise Broach on Friday (one copy per family, sent home with the youngest sibling in a family) with the intention of every family reading the book together! Our One Book, One Grove initiative will not only connect families, but our entire Grove community throughout the course of the next five weeks. Students will be able to discuss the book with parents, neighbors, classmates, and any other Grove students! We are encouraging families to read the book in the best way that works for their family. This may include parents reading to children, siblings taking turns reading aloud to the family, or a child reading to their parents! This year, we have also obtained the blessing of the author for Grove staff members to record themselves reading the chapters for students to listen to throughout the course of the program. Please access the link provided in the Grizzly email blast to the weekly recordings to listen to the chapters! These recordings are meant for Grove students and families only! The first weekly reading log will be due on Thursday, January 30th and students will receive their Family Reading Program t-shirts on Friday, January 31st for meeting the all classroom goal. We can’t wait to see all the students and staff in their shirts! Happy Reading!!!   1st-4th Grade STEM Club Session #2 We are excited to open up our registration for the second session of STEM Club next week.  The club will be for students in 1st-4th grades. An email will be sent out with the Sign-Up Genius link on Monday, January 27th.  This sign up is for anyone who was NOT able to register for Session 1 this fall and it will be on a first sign-up basis.  We only have materials and room for 45 students in our club.  Please ONLY sign up your child(ren), if they were not enrolled in Session 1 of our club.  We are hoping to give as many students an opportunity to participate!   Our first meeting will be Thursday, February 6, 2019.  We will meet every other Thursday after school until 3:45pm.  Your child will need to be picked up on the parking lot side of the building, given permission to walk home or attend KEEP after our meeting.     We are looking forward to another great session!     Kindergarten Round-Up for 2020-2021 School Year Parents of our incoming kindergarten students are invited to attend our Kindergarten Round-Up on Monday, February 3rd at 6:30 p.m. At this time, parents will hear an overview of the kindergarten programs, meet kindergarten staff, ask questions, and have the opportunity to pre-register for the 2020-2021 school year.   More detailed informational sessions for parents interested in Spanish Dual Language or Chinese Immersion programs will be held in February.    Please be sure to share the date for Kindergarten round-up with neighbors, friends, and community members who have kindergarten age children and may not have a child in the school system to hear about the event from our district.   Erin’s Law Presentations Many states, including Illinois, have passed a law with the intent of increasing the awareness of child sexual abuse. You may have heard of this legislation under it’s more common name, Erin’s Law, in honor of Erin Merryn, a young woman who has crossed the country advocating for laws that will increase awareness of this crime against children. One of the requirements of this law is that schools provide an age appropriate curriculum to all students relating to sexual abuse prevention. The purpose of the lessons is to provide students with the tools they need for personal safety, and to help them build confidence in advocating for themselves.   Mrs. Corey (Assistant Principal) and Mr. Walcott (Social Worker) will be conducting these lessons with our students on February 6th and February 7th. Classroom teachers will also be at the presentations. Please be sure to read the official letter regarding the presentations from Mrs. Corey. You may also contact either Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Corey, or Mr. Walcott regarding more specifics of the content of the presentations.      Technology Safety Guest Speaker at February 10th PTO Meeting Who: Ty Gorman – District 220 Director of Instructional Technology When: Monday, February 10th at 9:15 a.m.   What: Mr. Gorman will be sharing information with parents about Internet safety outside of the district and providing resources to help parents communicate with their children about establishing boundaries when using media and online resources at home. In addition, he will demonstrate for parents how to set up parent control restrictions and he will share parent management techniques for Barrington 220-issued student iPads. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the use of school devices at home.   Referendum 220 In order to inform the community about the $147 million school district referendum question on the March 17 ballot, Barrington 220 is holding 5 Community Information Meetings and 3 Open Houses (School Tours). All community members are encouraged to attend and ask questions. The agenda at all Community Information Meetings will be the same (short presentation, followed by Q&A). The results of this survey will be included as a portion of our official School Report Card and school ranking next fall. As a result, your participation and input is important, as we need at least 20% of our parent population to participate. Students in grades four and five, as well as, the Grove Avenue Staff will be participating in the survey.   The survey will be open until February 14th, but please take a few minutes to complete the survey as soon as possible.    Letter in English Letter in Spanish   Due to the fact that our district office is located in Lake County, parents will need to choose Lake County at the login page in order to then access the Grove link. Students need heavy winter clothing such as boots, gloves, scarves, hats, and snow pants every day!! The second Elementary Family STEM Night is being held at Roslyn Road on Thursday, February 13th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The activities for this evening are identical to the ones that were offered at the first event earlier this year held at Grove. Thursdays, 9 am at Sunny Hill Elementary School.  It takes about an hour or less to pack bags of food for qualifying students to take home on the weekend. These are students from every school in Barrington 220 including Grove. Whether you can only stop in one time or you want to help once a month, the help is greatly appreciated. You can bring young children with you, relatives or a friend. The more people who show up, the quicker it goes.
