GROVE ABC COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER

As the end of the school year approaches, our students and staff will continue to be working hard and learning and growing all the way until the very last day of school. With that said, we also are planning to build in some fun to celebrate the end of the school year and make our last days together for the year memorable. As a result, we will have an ABC Countdown that students and staff are invited to participate in over the course of the last 26 days of the school year – one day for each letter in the alphabet. Please click on the link to the ABC Calendar that has been created for our students. The calendar shares what each day will entail!

SPRING BENCHMARKING CONTINUES - Updates with new info.!!!

We began our spring benchmarking assessments with students this past week and will continue into May. All students in grades K-2 participate in Fastbridge Assessments for reading and math. The Fastbridge reading and math assessments have already started and will continue this upcoming week.  All students in grades 2-5 participate in the MAP Assessments for both reading and math. MAP assessments will begin the first week of May and will take place for two weeks.

In order to learn more about the experiences of students at school and continue to monitor and improve programming for children in the areas of Social and Emotional Learning, District 220 is asking for students to complete an online survey that will be administered starting this week through November 3rd. This experience is similar to the SEL surveys conducted over the last three years by the district. Please see the official letter from the district regarding the survey. Also, Grove is continuing to pilot the Fastbridge MySaebrs assessment (a social, academic, emotional screener), so students in 2nd-5th grade will participate in this assessment in May.

I have included a link directly to the district letter with details regarding our assessments for your convenience, as well as, a link to information regarding the district SEL survey. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or Mrs. Matthews with any questions.

BIG EVENT - BROOKFIELD ZOO FIELD TRIP

We will be going on our all school field trip to the Brookfield Zoo this Friday as our culminating activity to our Family Reading Program. We are looking forward to a fun day together! Below are some tips to ensure our students are prepared for the day:

  • We will be going on the trip Rain or Shine, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather

    • Please put sunscreen on your child before they leave if you feel they will need it for the day, based on the weather

  • Students will be walking all day, so please make sure that your child wears tennis/gym shoes that are comfortable and good for walking

  • Please make sure your child has a full breakfast.

  • Students bringing a sack lunch from home should bring their lunch in a disposable bag/container so they don’t have to worry about losing a lunch box or carrying it around all day. Students should also have their first and last name written on the bag. Students who ordered a lunch for school will be given the lunch in a disposable paper bag.

  • Students must arrive at school on time. We will be leaving shortly after school starts and we want to make sure we can take attendance, have students use the restroom, ensure everyone has a lunch, and organize students into groups prior to leaving.

  • Students should NOT bring money.

NEW ELEMENTARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA) CURRICULUM

District #220 has adopted a new ELA Curriculum that will be implemented starting next school year. This includes new reading, writing, and word study curriculum and student materials for all classrooms grades K-5. Consequently, our teachers will be participating in professional development training over the next two weeks in preparation for the implementation of the new curriculum. You can anticipate that your child’s teacher will be out of the classroom for a full day over the course of the next two weeks. Our district will also be providing a Parent University for all elementary parents to learn about the new curriculum and how they can continue to support their child at home. I will share the details of the upcoming parent meeting as soon as they are available.

BIG EVENT - BROOKFIELD ZOO FIELD TRIP

We shared with students that our BIG EVENT will be an all school field trip to the Brookfield Zoo! Information went out to parents via email on Thursday. Please be sure to complete the Google Form to provide permission and indicate your child’s lunch choice as soon as possible! We are looking for chaperones to join us on the event. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher directly if you are interested. We do already have many chaperones who have already signed up, but are looking for just a couple more for some classrooms!

Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR)

This coming week, our 3rd – 5th grade students will continue to participate in the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR). The IAR is the required standardized state testing.

Students will complete three Math tests (one per day) on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, April 11th-13th. Make-up assessments will be conducted when possible throughout the assessment window and will need to be completed by Friday of this week. It is extremely important that students are in attendance for these assessments and prepared to do their best, as the assessments are used to rate our school on the Illinois School Report Card.

Parents can help ensure that their children are prepared to do their best as well! Please be sure that your child:

  • Gets a good night sleep on the evenings before the tests

  • Eats a healthy breakfast on the morning of the assessments

  • Arrives to school on time, as some testing will begin immediately in the morning

  • Brings their iPad updated and fully charged

  • Brings their school issued headphones or earphones

Please be sure to read the official letter regarding IAR with additional suggestions as to how parents can support students with the testing and more details regarding the assessments. You may also contact me directly with any questions.
