The Grove Grizzly
A Note From the Office

As Halloween quickly approaches, we are providing one last post regarding festivities. A couple reminders:
  • Please make sure the teacher knows if your child is being picked up during the lunch hour.
  • If you are picking up your child at 11:00 a.m., please wait outside and we will have staff on hand to help students find their parents. Also, please let your child know which side of the school you will be waiting on at 11:00 a.m.
  • If you’re attending the classroom party, please park in the field adjacent to the playground. This will ensure our buses have adequate space during dismissal as well as provide parents with an easy exit at the end of the day.
Lunch – October 31st
  • At 11:00 a.m., students may be picked up if it is easier for them to dress and eat lunch at home.  Please do not expect your child to leave before 11:00 a.m.
  • Students do not need to be signed out, but if you plan on picking your child up for lunch, be sure to send a note to your child’s teacher.
  • There will be adults supervising the parking lot during the 11:00 pick-up and by the Grove entrance. Please focus on safety!
  • Students should return to school at 12:30 p.m.
  • If your child is staying at school for lunch, please send your child's costume to school. Lunch and recess for students staying at school will remain the same and students will change into their costumes following lunch and recess.
Parade – October 31st
  • Our kindergarten classes will wear costumes to school and have their parties in the morning before the a.m. students leave to go home. Morning kindergarteners are invited to return for the parade in the afternoon.
  • Our parade for grades K-5 will begin at 1 P.M. and will follow the route below:
o   Leave from the Grove door and travel north to Wisconsin.
o   Travel east on Wisconsin to Summit.
o   Travel south on Summit to Yale.
o   Travel west on Yale to Cook.
o   Travel north on Cook to our parking lot entrance.
o   We love parents and guests cheering us on.
  • We will be back at school at about 1:30
  • If it rains, we will parade in the school hallways.
Party – October 31st – 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • After the parade, students will return to classrooms for our fabulous room parties organized by our PTO room parents.
Costumes
Please review the following guidelines when selecting a school Halloween costume for this year:
  • Students in kindergarten may wear their costumes to school in the morning.
  • Students in 1st-5th Grades should not wear costumes to school, as they will go home to change into costumes or change after lunch and recess.
  • Consider safety and the appropriateness of a costume for an elementary school.
  • Costumes involving fake blood or violent attributes are not allowed.
  • Look-alike weapons are prohibited on school grounds as noted in the student handbook.
  • Masks are a safety concern, and therefore, will not be allowed.
  • Please keep face paint to a minimum as students need to be easily recognized and often become uncomfortable. Examples of appropriate face paint include: cat whiskers, Harry Potter’s scar, “eye black” on an athlete, etc.
We hope to create a safe and fun event for our students, so thank you for your cooperation!

Great Grove Reads

Night Divided by Jennifer Nielson

It is 1961 and Gerta and her family live in Berlin. Her father has been trying to find work but has struggled finding anything in the city. Ever since WWII ended tensions have run high not only between Russia and the USA but in the city itself. Simple freedoms like being able to talk openly about the government have been prohibited. There was talk that people should leave; that things were only going to get worse. When Gerta’s father left the city to find work he was supposed to return in a day or two. But, on August 13, 1961 a wall was built in the middle of the city separating east and west Berlin.  Suddenly Gerta, her mother, and brother Fritz were separated from her father and brother Dominic. Gerta’s father had been very outspoken about how oppressive life had become in Berlin. Now those actions were making life very difficult for Gerta and her family in the new city of East Berlin; guards are now watching them, their home has been wiretapped. Everyday on her way to school Gerta has to pass by the wall, which has increased in thickness and security everyday. On the west side of the wall a platform has been built where people from the west could climb to see if they could locate family that was left behind. One day Gerta sees her father. When he notices that she saw him he does a strange dance that ends by pretending to dig. For several days Gerta sees her father and he always does the same dance. What was he trying to tell her?  Then one day she receives a mysterious drawing of a building. She is sure that she has seen it before. Gerta is certain that her father wants her to tunnel out of East Berlin but would he really ask that of her? No one can be trusted and being caught could mean death. This is a great historical fiction story that tells of an important part of history.
