Distance Learning Extended Through the End of 2019-2020 School Year
Today, Governor Pritzker canceled in-person classes at all Illinois schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
We will continue to implement our Distance Learning Plan (click here to see FAQs) on weekdays through the last day of school on Thursday, May 28th. We are fortunate to have the tools and staff expertise that allow us to continue engaging students remotely for the remainder of the school year. Please continue to communicate directly with your child’s teacher throughout the duration of Distance Learning. We are here to support our students and families and want to ensure that our students are able to learn successfully through the end of May. This certainly will be a year that all of us, including our children, will never forget.

Distance Learning Schedule Note
As communicated by Dr. Harris today, Monday, May 4th will be No School for students. Under the Illinois State Board of Education guidelines for Remote Learning Days, school district staff can use up to five school days to work on Remote Learning Day Plans in partnership with their collective bargaining units. This day will serve as a virtual professional development day for staff. Students will not receive any assignments on this day. Instead, they can use the time to catch up on school work and learning activities. As the closure continues, we have additional days for this purpose.

Distance Learning Schedule Note
As communicated by Dr. Harris last week, this Thursday, April 16th will be No School for students. Under the Illinois State Board of Education guidelines for Remote Learning Days, school district staff can use up to five school days to work on Remote Learning Day Plans in partnership with their collective bargaining units. In Barrington 220 we plan to use one of these days on Thursday, April 16. This day will serve as a virtual professional development day for staff. Students will not receive any assignments on this day. Instead, they can use the time to catch up on school work and learning activities. As the closure continues, we may need to use additional days for this purpose.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
As we all navigate this uncertain time, we understand many students and their families may face difficult situations. We will continue to use every Monday as a social emotional learning (SEL) day. This is a day when teachers will share a lesson that focuses on the health and well-being of their students, instead of only focusing on academic lesson plans. Previously, we were sending out three activities for students to complete on these days, however, students are now only required to complete one. Students may still complete additional optional activities that are provided to them by staff or go back to the week prior to complete optional activities, catch up on assignments, or complete additional special activities! It is always a great day to read as well!

The Grove Grizzly
Thank you to all of our families for your support with our first week back to Distance Learning following Spring Break. We are continuing to make adjustments and improvements to our practices as we learn more about the needs and growth of our students within this new structure, so please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher throughout this process.

Please keep in mind that inquiries regarding specials activities for Art, Music, Library, P.E., and STEM should be directed straight to our specials staff. I have included a list of their emails below, as well as, a link directly to the specials activity page on our webpage.

Mrs. Banach – Librarian – rbanach@barrington220.org
Mrs. Bott-Rife – P.E. – bbottrife@barrington220.org
Mrs. Boyer – Music – cboyer@barrington220.org
Mrs. deBruin – STEM – mdebruin@barrington220.org
Mr. Root – Art – troot@barrington220.org
Mr. Rosenberg – P.E. – jrosenberg@barrington220.org
Mr. Ross – P.E. – tross@barrington220.org

This coming Monday-Wednesday our 3rd – 5th grade teachers will be participating in a professional development training that we had planned since the start of the school year. We will be continuing the training virtually, but have minimized the time for each grade level on these three days. Classroom teachers will communicate with parents and students as to the specific time frames on these three days that they will be unavailable due to their participation in the training. It is our hope that this experience will help us continue to address strategies and resources for distance learning and our students over the remainder of the distance learning time frame.

Finally, Governor JB Pritzker’s Executive Order 2020-15, issued last week, suspends state assessments for spring 2020. This action officially ends assessment activity statewide for the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, Illinois Science Assessment, SAT, and Dynamic Learning Maps-Alternate Assessment for the 2019-20 school year.

Digital Citizenship
With social distancing continuing through April 30th, our students and families are required to rely on the use of technology more than ever to communicate with families, friends, and engage in learning. Consequently, I believe that it is important for us to revisit our protocols and expectations with our students for appropriate use of technology. Teachers will continue to use our Mondays of Distance Learning to address our Students Social Emotional Needs, as well as, what it means to be a digital citizen. I also encourage parents to revisit guidelines and parameters at home. I have included links to some useful information for parents when thinking about keeping students safe digitally and setting parameters for technology usage.
