Report Cards for the First Marking Period

Report cards will be accessible to parents electronically via the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent Portal at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22nd. Report cards are NOT printed in paper form, as we went GREEN several years ago, so parents must access the reports via IC.

Grove Student Newspaper Publication - 2nd Edition

Please check out the second publication of our Grove 4th & 5th Grade Newspaper!! This is a new club that started at Grove this year! The mission of the club is to strive to nurture a passion for writing, promote creativity and collaboration, and foster a sense of belonging. Most of all, it seeks to hear the voices of our students. The club will be publishing one edition each month throughout the school year. We will share publications with our students, staff, and parents each month! Enjoy!

Grove Family Picture Wall and Humans of Grove Avenue site!!

We have received copies of the Grove Family Pictures that were taken back in September and are in the process of hanging them up on the wall outside of the main office for our students, staff, and families to see and enjoy! We are also inviting families to submit a little blurb about their family to be included in our Humans of Grove Avenue web page that we have created just for Grove Families! I shared an example of my own blurb about my family for the site during our Parent Back to School Night! A QR code will be added next to the picture of each family picture up on the wall, which will take individuals to the story of each family. Please click on the link to the Humans of Grove Avenue Google Form to submit your family story to be included on our site and linked to the QR code for your picture. If you did not take a family photo during the Grove Family Pictures, you CAN still participate by submitting a picture and your story to the Google Form!! We would love to have all of our Grove families represented on the wall and web page!

Fastbridge Parent Reports and IAR Parent Reports

Parent reports were sent home with students last Friday for our kindergarten and 1st-grade students who took the Fastbridge Early Reading and Fastbridge Early Math assessments. Please keep in mind that these reports reflect the student’s performance on these assessments during our Fall Benchmark Assessment window that was done back in early September. As a result, it is likely that students have made progress since those assessments and will demonstrate that growth when we conduct the assessments again during our Winter Benchmarking Window. Parents will receive reports again following the winter assessments, and we are hopeful that they will be distributed in a more timely manner. This is the first time these reports have been sent home with parents since we started using Fastbridge.

Parent reports were also sent home with students in 4th and 5th grades on Friday who participated in the IAR (Illinois Assessment of Readiness) during April of last school year. Given that these reports come from the state, we typically receive the reports for parents around this time each school year.

Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Matthews with any questions regarding these reports.

Attendance the Week of Thanksgiving

School is in session for two days during the week of Thanksgiving. It is important that students are in attendance on Monday, November 21st and Tuesday, November 22nd!

Barrington Giving Days

Barrington Giving Day is a Non-Profit organization that invites families in the 220 School District to a Giving Day event where they receive food, warm coats, hats/gloves, blankets, books, toys, and other much-needed items. Over 900 families in our community are in need of help. There are collection boxes in the main entrance of Grove where new or gently used/like new games or puzzles may be dropped off from now until December 7th. Our PTO will be sponsoring a special classroom lunch celebration for the class that donates the largest number of items.

Cold and Flu Season

Although we are just turning the corner to the weather of winter, we already have students experiencing the cold and flu season.  In order to minimize the spread of these illnesses, we all have to do our part in helping to keep our community healthy. We of course want students in school as much as possible and are not advocating for students to stay home with minor coughs or sneezes, but we do want to make sure that we are not exposing others to students who are contagious as well. Influenza seems to already be spreading, so please be on the lookout for its signs and symptoms. Influenza (flu) causes fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness), vomiting, and diarrhea. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness with two main types (Types A and B), caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Anyone who has influenza (flu) should stay home until fever-free for 24 hours. If you have questions about symptoms your child is experiencing or are not sure whether or not to keep your child home, please reach out to Nurse Brierton and she will be happy to talk with you. We also always recommend contacting your primary care provider/ pediatrician. If your child is diagnosed with influenza, please be sure to contact Nurse Brierton to report it. Thank you for your cooperation and support in taking care of our entire school community!!

Friday, November 4, 2022

Thank you to all of our room parents who planned and facilitated our Halloween Parties this past week! Also, thank you to our parents who donated items for the parties, volunteered at the parties, and came out to cheer on our students at the parade on Monday. Our students had a blast and it was a great day of celebrating and having fun together as a school!

Also, thank you to our parents and teachers who joined me on Thursday evening for our Community Book Study! It was such a nice evening together talking about belonging and what we can do as a community of parents and teachers in the spirit of belonging for all!

Health Office Update

I am so thrilled to share that our permanent nurse, Laurie Brierton, returned to Grove on Thursday! We missed her dearly over the past 6 months while she was recovering, and we are so happy to have her back! Our school spent time on Thursday celebrating her and welcoming her home to our Grove Community! It was an amazing day of collective joy to see her in the health office at Grove on Thursday!

GROVE Cold Weather Procedures

Our weather is starting to shift and get colder with frost on the ground earlier this week, so we want to make sure parents are aware of our procedures for students being outside as it gets cold! During the winter months, our students will go outside for recess as much as possible. If the temperature or wind chill is zero degrees or below the students will remain inside for recess. When the wind chill or temperature is above zero students will be outside. As a result, please be sure to send your children to school fully dressed to be outside for recess. It is also recommended that students bring layers such as sweatshirts and sweaters to take on and off throughout the day. Please be sure to put your child’s name somewhere on all items so that they can easily be identified and returned to students if they drop them or lose them in the school!

I am hopeful that snow will not be upon us for a while, but wanted to share our procedures for recess when there is snow. In order for students to play in the snow at school, they must have a winter coat, snow pants, boots, gloves, and a hat or earmuffs, as we want them to stay dry and be able to return to the classroom in the afternoon and concentrate on learning. We will try to have extra items for students at school in case they forget, but it is beneficial for students to bring all of these items each day during the winter so they are prepared no matter what. When there is enough snow on the ground, students will be able to participate in sledding at school, so they must be properly dressed! In addition, students should have a pair of gym shoes to wear during the school day while in class and in order to participate safely in P.E. each day.

Barrington 220 Inclement Weather Protocol

Information was sent out this week from the district regarding our Cold Weather Protocols for winter. Please click on the link to view the official district Inclement Weather Webpage for details regarding our procedures. A few basic details that I want to highlight and make sure parents are aware of are listed below:

  • School closings due to inclement weather or other unusual circumstances will be announced on the district website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Families will also receive a text, phone call and email through the Infinite Campus automated emergency notification system.

  • There are three potential scenarios that will be implemented in the event of inclement weather:

    • School Canceled: All school buildings will be closed and students will make up the inclement weather day at the end of the school year.

    • Early Dismissal: There may be some rare occasions where it will be necessary to dismiss school early. On these days, middle and high schools will dismiss first. Elementary school students will be released at their regular dismissal time.

    • e-Learning: All school buildings will be closed, however, students and staff will complete the school day from home. This would eliminate the need to make up days at the end of the school year. Teachers will check their usual electronic communication methods throughout the day during regular school hours, to support students. Students will have five (5) school days to complete their assigned work for the day and receive additional assistance from their teacher as needed.

      • Elementary Schools/ELC: Early childhood through fifth-grade children will have access to their assignments through their teacher’s usual electronic communication method of See-Saw or Schoology, and/or will follow their IEP eLearning plan. Additionally, kindergarten through fifth-grade students will receive assignments for Specials (art, music, physical education, library, and STEM) that they would typically have for the day from their teachers.

Reminders

  • Erin’s Law Presentations are going on in classes in October and November. Please be sure to click on the link to our official letter regarding Erin’s Law to learn more about the Law and what will be covered in the lessons.
