The Grove Grizzly
Our emergency drills this past week for Safety Week were a success and we had many conversations with our students about how to respond in emergency situations. We will continue to have these conversations as a staff and with our students throughout the school year. We still have two more fire drills that we need to complete this fall, as three are required. We will have one drill with the Barrington Fire Department during Fire Safety Week in October and one more, which will be unannounced. We will meet with our Grizzly Groups one time per month throughout the remainder of the school year to continue our important work of building and maintaining relationships and connections between our students and staff!

Parents can continue to support our efforts by following safety guidelines that we have set for our students and staff at Grove. The following safety measures for Grove are ones that we ask you continue to help us implement:
  • All guests must enter through the main entrance by the office and sign-in and receive a visitor’s badge. Please do not enter the building at another entrance even if it is before or after school.
  • Any student arriving after 8:00 a.m. must come to the main office entrance to sign-in and receive a pass from the office. This not only helps us account for students who may be marked tardy in their classroom, it also helps us ensure that the building is secure, as there is not an adult to monitor the door at the Grove Avenue entrance after 8:00 a.m.
  • All students should be dropped off and picked up at the Grove Avenue entrance in order to keep cars and busses separate from another.
  • All students and parents should cross at the cross walk on the Grove Avenue side of the building during arrival and drop-off.
Parents are also encouraged to continue conversations with students about things like fire safety at home, stranger danger, and pedestrian and bike safety in students’ neighborhoods.

Rett Awareness Campaign and Fundraiser Success!!!
Thank you to everyone who supported the Rett Awareness and Fundraising Campaign that Grove was involved in over the past few weeks! Between Grove, BHS, and PHS about 1,000 t-shirts were sold to support the cause!!! It was fun to see Grove families out at the football game on Friday evening as well!!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Our fall Parent/Teacher Conferences are quickly approaching this coming month! We will be holding our conferences on Wednesday, October 16th from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday, October 17th from 12-7 p.m. Please be sure to plan accordingly in order to attend conferences during the conference days that have been designated by the district for teachers to meet with parents. This is a valuable time to discuss the individual growth and skills of your child, as well as, work together with the teacher to plan and set goals toward your child’s individual progress.

Parents will be receiving a link via e-mail next Monday, October 7th to log on to our electronic sign-up platform called “Meet the Teacher” in order to choose a specific day and time to attend conferences. When parents log on, they will be able to sign-up for conferences for multiple children and for any staff member that works with their child including our art, gym, and library teachers. In addition, all related services staff members will meet with parents separately from the conferences with classroom teachers. As a result, parents can also schedule conference times with our Social Worker, Speech and Language Pathologist, Reading Resource Teachers, English Learner Teacher, Special Education Resource Teachers, and the Extended Teacher.

Thank you to all of our families who supported the Back to School Bash last Friday!! It was so great to see so many students and their families enjoying the evening together! We are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers who helped set-up, run games, check-in volunteers, sell tickets, cook and serve food, and clean-up! Thank you also to all of our families who donated to help sponsor games, activities, and food. We had a fantastic evening as a community! Thank you to our PTO for planning this event! Communities Unite to Fight Rett
Barrington High School and Palatine High School Communities are uniting to fight Rett Syndrome! The two schools will be participating in a joint fundraiser to raise money for Rett research in efforts to find a cure. Both schools are selling Rett Awareness t-shirts to be worn at the September 27th football game being held at Palatine High, where the teams will face each other. Please consider purchasing a shirt for a minimum donation of $15/per shirt. We would love to see Grove families at the football game at PHS on September 27th as Madden Manz, sibling of two Grove students, will be leading the teams onto the field. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt please contact the Grove school office! Parents can also send in money with the desired shirt size, and we will send home with students!!

Donations can also be made online through Rettsyndrome.org or amissionformadden.com

Family Pictures
We are offering the opportunity for Grove families to come in on two different evenings to take family pictures to be added to our collage of Grove Families in the main hallway of the school. The pictures will be taken on Monday, September 23rd and Tuesday, September 24th from 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. Click on the link to choose a time slot on the Sign-Up Genius.

Safety Week 2019 – Monday, September 23rd – Friday, September 27th
Barrington 220 will hold its second annual Safety Week next week. The goal is to raise awareness about school safety among our students, parents, staff and community members.

At the beginning of each school day, all students will view a one- minute video that has a "Safety 220 Tip of the Day". Each tip corresponds with a safety theme for that day of the week. In addition to a safety tip for students, each video also has one tip for parents. I will be sending out the video to parents the evening prior to each day in order for parents to have an opportunity to dialogue with their children prior to the videos, conversations, and drills that will take place at school throughout the week.

In addition, Barrington 220 will be hosting a SAFETY 220 FACEBOOK LIVE broadcast on Tuesday, Sept. 24th from 7pm-8pm. Community members are invited to join Superintendent Dr. Brian Harris, Assistant Superintendent of K-12 Schools and Operations Dr. Craig Winkelman, and Barrington Police Chief Dave Dorn, for a discussion about safety in our schools. Participants will have a chance to ask questions and get answers in real time. To participate, head to the Barrington 220 Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/barrington220/

Below is information regarding what is planned for students throughout the week at Grove. Please know that our teachers will be facilitating the conversations and activities in a way that is age appropriate for each grade level.
