The Grove Grizzly
Author Visit and Family Night RSVP

We will be having author, Aaron Reynolds, visiting Grove on Thursday, January 24th! Not only will he be presenting to our students during the school day, but we have opted to use one of our sessions to offer a presentation for our families in the evening! This is a great way to continue to promote family reading and connect our entire community during the course of our Family Reading Program that begins this coming Thursday! As a result, we would like families to RSVP for this event by noon this Sunday, January 13th in order to ensure that we will have enough families in attendance. Please click on this link to R.S.V.P. For more information regarding Aaron Reynolds, please visit his website!!

5 Essentials Parent Survey

The 5 Essentials Survey is parents’ opportunity to evaluate Grove Avenue School according to five “essential” areas critical for school success, including but not limited to ambitious instruction, supportive environment, and leadership. The online survey is open now through February 15th and is accessed by clicking here. PLEASE NOTE: Because Barrington 220 is based in Lake County, choose "Lake" from the county drop down menu, then select our school.

Illinois public schools are required by the State of Illinois to take the 5Essentials survey once every two years. The survey data becomes part of each school’s Illinois School Report Card listing, which is a public website provided by the Illinois State Board of Education. Barrington 220 will receive results from the survey in the spring of 2019, and they will be publicly posted on our Illinois School Report Card the following fall.

Thank you for your participation in this important survey. We appreciate and value your feedback.

Mindful Waste Program at Grove

Over 200 pounds of perfectly good, sealed food and milk are thrown away each day in our district. Mindful Waste, a Barrington-based nonprofit founded by two Barrington 220 parents, offers a district-approved food recovery program to combat this problem. The program is currently running successfully in eight of the Barrington 220 schools and starting this month. Grove is going to be the ninth school to implement the program!

Food recovery simply means saving food that would otherwise be thrown away, and donating that food to local food pantries. Mindful Waste has provided a refrigerator, bin, signage and scale, which are the only materials needed to run the program at our school!

Starting next week, Grove’s very own 5th grade Girl Scouts, assisted by parent and teacher volunteers, are taking ownership of the program and implementing it in our lunchroom. Our students will be informed of the program on the morning announcements and by their teachers in the classrooms. They will then be guided by adults in the lunchroom in order to participate in the program. Students are of course encouraged to first eat what is in their lunch, then take uneaten food home, and then potentially donate it. An information video about the program in our schools can also be accessed by clicking on this link!

Mindful Waste volunteers coordinate pick-up and delivery of food to local food pantries and we are looking for volunteers to help with the drop- off to Greencastle where the food from Grove will be donated. If you would like to help, please click on the link to the sign-up genius to volunteer!

Each new school we add helps us amplify the good District 220 students are doing in our community, and provides students with invaluable learning experiences! We look forward to Grove being a part of the efforts!!
