A Note from the Office

Blueprint 220 Meeting
A Chance to Weigh in on the Future of Our Schools
What do you want our schools and our community to look like five, 10, 20 years down the road? The board of education plans to hold a special meeting to discuss the Blueprint 220 initiative, where all community members will have a chance to learn more about possible Blueprint 220 concepts and ideas. The interactive meeting will feature videos and student performances. It will start at 6:00pm on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Barrington High School.
 
Fall Conferences Sign Up
Fall conferences are from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18th and from 1-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 19th. Please follow this link to sign up for conferences.

Welcome to the Library Information Center
Did you Know?

1. That we are a full access library information center. Students are allowed to visit the library any time during the school day and they are allowed to check out a book even if they forgot their books

2.Every week I review a book in Mrs. Matthews’  Blog under Great Grove Reads

3.We will have book clubs for students in 4th-5th grade during the student’s lunch/recess time. Other grades will have parent/student book clubs and will be held at night. Look for the online flyers during the year.

4.Our Maker Club for 5th graders will begin meeting on Thursdays after school starting October 12, 2017. Students explore by taking things apart and by creating new things based on their own interests.

 

Here is a run-down of what students are learning by grade level from the beginning of the year until now.

 

Kindergarten:

  • Are learning to check out great reading materials on topics that interest them

  • Are learning the difference between authors and illustrators and their roles in creating a book

  • Are learning how illustrations impact the story

1st Grade:

  • Are learning ways to help students identify if a book has a good reading level for them

  • Are learning about the differences between fiction and nonfiction

  • Compared and contrasted similar stories

2nd Grade:

  • Are learning techniques to choose good books to read

  • Are learning about locating great books in the library by our genre system

  • Are learning how to locate great nonfiction books

  • Are learning about fairy tales from around the world

3rd, 4th and 5th grade:  

  • Are learning about their Internet digital footprint and the importance of safe and responsible online behavior

  • Are learning how to access multiple sources for learning

  • Are learning Destiny Discover (online catalog system) to locate both print books and ebooks

  • Are learning to use Biblionasium to recommend good books to their friends

  • Are learning the elements of different genres so that they can expand their reading selections

  • Are learning ways to evaluate a source for for correct information

Tasty Tuesday exists to increase opportunities for students to taste a variety of fruits and vegetables at school and home to promote healthy nutrition habits for life.

Sugar snap peas are high in Vitamin C, which speeds wound healing, boosts immunity and aids in the production of collagen.

Join​ ​Grove’s​ ​After​ ​School​ ​Tae​ ​Kwon​ ​Do​ ​Enrichment​ ​Program!  

When: Wednesday Classes on October 11th , 18th , 25th and November 1st from 2:15 pm - 3 pm (after school in the gym!). 
All Grove students K-5 are welcome to participate.  Cost is $40.
