A Note from the Office

Spring Assessment Scores
Spring assessment scores for students in 2nd – 5th grades were sent home with students today. Specifically, MAP scores went home with all students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Please note that the percentiles that are included on the MAP reports are national percentiles versus local percentiles. CogAT scores were also sent home with students in 2nd and 5th grades only. These reports include both national and local percentiles. A specific letter explaining the assessments was included in the envelope with the assessment scores, however, should you have questions regarding your child’s scores, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or Mrs. Matthews and we will be happy to answer your questions or help you interpret the data.

Barrington Learning NOW
Learning NOW in Barrington 220 is an online video series highlighting learning in Barrington 220 from the student perspective. Each episode focuses on one topic through the lens of students in different grade levels—elementary, middle, and high school. The series aims to create a better understanding in the Barrington community about how students learn now and how the classroom environment has changed with the addition of a technology device in the hands of each student. The first episode of Learning NOW in Barrington 220 is online now, and a new episode will be released each week for a total of eight episodes.    bit.ly/learningnow220

In episode 1 of Learning NOW in Barrington 220, The Classroom, Barrington 220 students James Vondrak (North Barrington Elementary), Khadija Ikram (Barrington Middle School-Prairie), and Amy Tinajero-Rosiles (Barrington High School) talk about how learning takes place in a current Barrington 220 classroom where every student and teacher uses a technology device. Barrington 220 students in Grades K–8 use iPad devices and high school students use laptops for learning and teaching. Students from Barrington Middle School-Prairie created a special segment for this episode to demonstrate how students might have created a school presentation project in the 1980s and compared the process to how a similar project might look today in 2018.

Learning NOW in Barrington 220 is available with English and Spanish subtitles. Each episode description includes instructions to turn on captions in YouTube.

Armstrong: The Adventurous Journey of a Mouse to the Moon by Torben Kuhlmann

Armstrong is a mouse with big dreams. After witnessing things he has seen in the human world he dreams that he can fly to the moon. He researches possible space travel and experiments until he discovers what he needs to be successful. Heavily illustrated, this book is a beautiful look at the spirit of science and discovery and celebrates our first lunar landing. If you like books that intertwine illustrations with text try this one alone or as a one-on-one shared reading experience with a primary student.

Historically, 4th grade parents help out the night of the event — if you are interested in doing this from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., we’d appreciate it. Thank you to those parents who already volunteered! Please contact Bree at bree.heick@gmail.com or Brittany at pbjsperling@sbcglobal.net if you are able to help.
